Mackex Services delivered high-voltage electrical infrastructure upgrades at Centennial Coal’s Mandalong underground coal mine in the Hunter Valley, including construction of a new 33kV powerline connecting the Mine Main Air Surface Substation (MMAS) to the Mine Shaft Surface Substation (MSSS) and electrical infrastructure for an EDL 8MW waste-gas power station on site.
Works comprised construction of a new 33kV overhead distribution line across the Mandalong mine site, installation of underground HV cables in the mine surface infrastructure area, and electrical works for the waste-coal-gas generation facility. Mackex performed detailed design, pole erection, conductor stringing, cable installation, termination and commissioning activities, coordinating with Centennial Coal’s operations team and Ausgrid as the network service provider for the mine supply point.
Constructing HV infrastructure in an active underground coal mine surface environment required strict compliance with mine site safety regulations and explosive atmosphere requirements. Coordinating works around mine operations including skip operations, ventilation infrastructure and surface conveyor systems required detailed permit-to-work management. The EDL waste-gas generation facility required specialised HV connection works including protection settings coordinated with Ausgrid’s network control for embedded generation.
