Getting a new electricity connection in NSW is a coordinated process between your electrician, a Level 2 ASP, and the relevant distribution network.
Step 1: Internal wiring by licensed electrician
Before any network connection, a licensed electrician completes all internal wiring and issues a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW).
Step 2: Engage a Level 2 ASP
A Level 2 ASP handles everything from the meter board to the street network. This cannot be done by a standard electrician in NSW.
- Assess connection requirements
- Design the service arrangement (overhead or underground)
- Lodge the connection application with the DNSP
- Install the service line, metering, and point of attachment
- Coordinate energisation with the network operator
Step 3: DNSP approval and energisation
Standard residential connections typically take 5 to 15 business days. Large commercial or HV connections can take longer depending on network assessment requirements.
What affects cost and timeframe?
- Overhead vs underground service
- Distance from the street main
- Single-phase vs three-phase supply
- Network capacity constraints
